Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley continued his unbeaten run for BAMMA picking up a second round win over Brazilian Marinho Maurizio Da Rocha.
Da Rocha, a late change for the injured Igor Fernandes, came into the BAMMA 16 bout against Daley boasting an explosive record of his own, finishing 75% of his 28 wins via KO.
The fight opened tentatively as both men sized each other up; no doubt aware of each other’s striking records. Daley launched a couple of vicious high kicks which just missed their mark, while Da Rocha landed a smart uppercut, although he took an elbow for his troubles. Daley showed good patience as he looked to pick off his opponent and landed several knees which Da Rocha brushed off.
The second round soon quickened up with Daley dictating the pace and throwing volume at the Brazilian. Every time the Nottingham fighter got caught up in close quarters he was able to land an inside elbow or a knee.
Da Rocha was by no means overwhelmed though and tagged Daley with a couple of punches of his own. However, he could not cope with the pace of his opponent who started to unleash some big shots. Daley caught the Brazilian flush with a big body shot that send his opponent to the floor midway through the second and followed up on the canvas before the referee stepped in to end the bout.

While Daley was the draw, there was also plenty of interest in the World BAMMA Featherweight title fight between champion Tom Duquesnoy and challenger Ashleigh Grimshaw.
Duquesnoy has earned a big reputation in his short time at BAMMA and is regarded as one of Europe’s hottest MMA prospects. Grimshaw was set to be his biggest test to date until controversy literally struck early on.
Both fighters came flying out of the gate, throwing punches at each other, but within 15 seconds the bout was over and Grimshaw was sprawled on the canvas. However, it was not a punch, or indeed a victory that ended the fight, but a low blow. Duquesnoy sent an inside leg kick wide of the mark, catching Grimshaw plum on the…well…
That caused a delay leaving Grimshaw calling for the doctor and eventually signified a no contest as the veteran was unable to continue.
It proved to be something of an anti-climax to hugely anticipated fight.

The BAMMA Lonsdale British Welterweight title proved to be an exciting, but strange, one-sided three round affair as champion Leon Edwards eventually got the KO against Shaun The Disgrace Taylor. Edwards slipped early on which opened the door for Taylor to attack. The 24-year-old Scot pinned his opponent against the cage, but was unable to gain any real momentum. Edwards eventually spun clear and created separation.
It was all the impetus Edwards needed and as he locked in for another clinch, he caught his smaller opponent with a knee that sent him to the floor. However, Edwards, perhaps with an air of both arrogance and naivety, turned away in celebration, thinking it was all over rather going in for the kill.
Taylor got back to his feet, but was soon on the canvas again as Edwards launched a high left kick which clipped the challenger’s head. Taylor showed good toughness as he withstood the follow up. However, a cut appeared over his left eye which got progressively worse throughout as the Scot had trouble keeping the south paw attacks of the champion at bay.
Edwards kept picking off Taylor, but was unable to find the killer blow. Taylor, to his credit, showed great resilience, although was unable to find any meaningful attack.
Edwards sent Taylor back to the canvas in the third, but once again hesitated to finish him on the floor. He didn’t have to wait long though and a swinging left sent Taylor to the canvas for the last time on the night. Edwards looked to the referee for assurance that it was really over before a relieved puff of the cheeks saw him retain his title.

Elsewhere on the show for TUF competitor Mike Wootten got a debut BAMMA win after causing his opponent Antoine Gallinaro to tap out via a choke in the second round.
It was a good victory for Wootten who was sent to the canvas in the first after swallowing a big shot from Gallinaro. That cut Wootten’s left eye, but it did not affect his volume as he landed elbow after elbow on his opponent who he dominated throughout.
